Explaining Secessionism: What Do We Really Know About It?

In this thematic issue we discuss what really know about the explanations for secessionism. Over last few decades, an increasing number of new analyses on secessionism have appeared, regarding both its normative and empirical dimensions. We can distinguish at least three types research questions that categorise current secessionism: normative, explanatory, pragmatic. Political theorists work mainly moral political right to unilaterally secede, answering such as “under conditions” is legitimate “who” has (Requejo & Sanjaume-Calvet, 2015; Sanjaume‐Calvet, 2020). Despite importance theories, these approaches do not provide secessionism, although most them are built implicit phenomena. The field explanatory theories secession focuses individual and/or aggregate preconditions variables correlate (or not) with presence absence) secessionist movements in specific territories.
